A Mission family is responding to new details in the officer-involved shooting that killed 39-year-old Juan Osornio.

As previously reported, Osornio was killed in the shooting that happened at around 12:04 a.m. Aug. 16 in the 1600 block of Oblate Avenue.

According to a news release, officers with the Mission Police Department responded to reports of a person experiencing a "high-stress situation." During the incident, the person moved toward a citizen and officers while armed with a knife, causing officers to fire their weapons, fatally striking the individual.

Police later confirmed a knife was found at the scene.

In a statement issued Wednesday morning, police released photos they said showed an individual armed with a knife, and charging at the officers after holding an unidentified woman by the neck while holding the knife.

“Officers may be required to make split-second decisions based on the actions of a suspect and the circumstances confronting them,” Mission Police Chief Cesar Torres said in the statement. “In connection with the recent officer-involved shooting, every action taken during the incident must be carefully examined to determine whether those actions were consistent with the law and the authority vested in our officers. There is no doubt that this incident is devastating for all those affected."

Police declined to confirm the identity of the person killed in the shooting or the woman in the photos.

In a Tuesday interview with Channel 5 News, a relative identified the victim as Osornio, and refuted the account provided by police.

"My mom and my brother were sitting on this couch as they did every night before she went to bed," Blanca Osornio said.

That's when they heard a loud knock. Blanca said her mother got up and opened the door.

"My brother was behind her, and it was like the police, Mission PD, all of a sudden, my brother is tased. There were no commands or anything; they just tased him. He pushed my mom out of the way because he didn't want her to get hurt. Then they started firing at my brother," Blanca said.

On Wednesday, Blanca Osornio and her sisters, Rosalba Gonzalez and Amanabely Rodriguez, again disputed the version of events provided by police.

"My brother was in shock, and so was my mother. That's all we see in the pictures," Gonzalez said.

The sisters said the woman in the photos is their mother.

"Him supposedly holding a knife to my mom? No. That's him turning around, trying to shield my mother. You can clearly see another officer pointing a gun at them," the sisters said. "My brother saw all of that, and so he freaked out, and as they were tasering him he grabbed my mother and pushed her out of the way."

The sisters said they still don't know who called the police in the first place.

The six Mission police officers who responded to the scene have since been placed on administrative leave.
