WESLACO - Some neighbors close to one of the churches housing immigrants say they are concerned for their safety.

Evelyn Langford, 90, lives close to the Church of the Nazarene, one of the centers helping to meet the high demand of migrants seeking shelter.

Langford says she is more vigilant as to who might be knocking on her door after a large group of people arrived.

The Pastor at the Church of Nazarene, Eric Buell, says he was contacted by the Catholic Charities to house over 80 immigrants.

He says this is the first time they ever house immigrants and has received some complaints from concerned neighbors.

“This is a humanitarian crisis and we as a church respond with Christ love. When there is someone that needs food we are called to give them food, and someone that needs shelter, we give them shelter. I perceive our role as something very simple: we respond,” says Buell.

He adds there is no clear end date for this activity and it could be more than two weeks before it comes to an end.
