New LED lights being installed at Rio Grande City park
A park in Rio Grande City is getting new lights, and the city is partially paying for it.
Veterans Park is getting 35 new LED lights that will be installed throughout the park and parking lot.
The old system is about 10 years old and city leaders say weather destroyed it.
"It's going to be brighter at night, or in the morning, whenever the citizens or the community want to come out and exercise or walk in the morning or at night," Rio Grande City Parks and Recreation Director Marco Treviño said. "Now with the time changing pretty soon, it's going to get darker even earlier. So this is just a way to make sure the park is well lit and safe for the community."
Insurance is covering 80 percent of the cost, and the city will cover the rest, which comes out to about $5,000.
The project should wrap up in about two weeks.
