Over 300 grams of cocaine found in Santa Muerte shrine during Brownsville raid
Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 52-year-old man on a cocaine charge after investigators found more than 300 grams of cocaine and crack at a Brownsville home arranged in a shrine of Santa Muerte statues, according to a press release.
The sheriff’s office identified the man as Gerardo Sandoval Martinez, who the sheriff's office said was in the country illegally.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit searched a home in the 2100 block of Autumn Sage Street on Thursday. Investigators found cocaine in bulk form and in individually packaged clear baggies inside a closet.
"The cocaine bags were surrounded by resin statues associated with the “Lady of Holy Death” (Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte), arranged in a shrine-like display along with other items consistent with cult practices," the news release stated.
Investigators seized about 266 grams of cocaine and 35 grams of crack cocaine.
Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Border Patrol assisted the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office during the operation.
