The Better Business Bureau will hold a free shredding event Saturday in McAllen.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Lone Star National Bank, located at 520 E. Nolana Ave., people can bring old bills, bank statements, and tax forms for free shredding.

The event aims to help people and businesses protect themselves from identity theft by safely destroying documents with personal information.

“If you end up taking your documents to a place where they shred your documentation or your documents, there's going to be a charge. They charge you by the pound; this is going to be free,” Better Business Bureau Rio Grande Valley President Hilda Salinas said. 

The event will also accept modems, CD drives, used credit card swipers, laptops, and computer towers. There is no limit on the amount of material people can bring.

The event is open to anyone in the Rio Grande Valley, and no registration is required.
