HIDALGO – Potential asylum seekers now have a new less visible barrier at the border.

Immigrants on U.S. soil can make asylum claims, regardless of how they entered the country. But a new proclamation aims to change that, at least, temporarily.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reported on the new regulation the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security approved that paved the way to Friday’s announcement.

Here are some of the main points of the proclamation President Trump signed:

• Asylum seekers can only enter at the ports of entry

• This suspension and limitation of asylum seekers entering the U.S. will last for a period of 90 days; the possibility exists for extensions

• It only applies to those entering the states after Friday, Nov. 9, meaning it doesn’t apply to others who have entered prior to this day

• The new proclamation affects Central Americans, not any immigrant or lawful permanent resident

• The U.S. will work with Mexico to take steps to deter, dissuade and return immigrants before they reach the U.S.-Mexico border
