A Rio Grande City High School student was taken into custody have claiming to have a weapon in his backpack.

At around 9:24 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, Rio Grande City High School was placed on lockdown after a student approached a teacher and said he had a weapon in his backpack, according to Rio Grande City Grulla ISD Police Chief Hugo Garcia.

Garcia said the teacher immediately alerted administration and authorities. The student and the backpack never left the teacher's sight.

The lockdown was lifted after authorities searched the student's backpack and found no weapon. Garcia confirmed there was never a weapon on campus.

According to Garcia, the student claimed he dreamed, he had a weapon in his backpack.

The district posted on Facebook that normal campus operations have resumed and the safety of students and staff remains their highest priority.
