SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – The National Weather Service issued a warning for beachgoers headed to South Padre Island.

NWS meteorologists said rip currents could be deadly as they could rush out at 25 to 30 miles per hour.

Barry Goldsmith with the NWS said the unusually strong rip currents are being created by a combination of weather events, including Hurricane Irma.

The strong wave surge the hurricane sent into the Gulf of Mexico clashed into both low-pressure and high-pressure systems amplifying those wave patterns. It’s created dangerous conditions off the shores of South Padre Island for several days.

The high risk warnings will remain in effect until Wednesday.
