SAN JUAN – The room is quiet Monday, but that won’t be the case Tuesday at the San Juan Basilica Auditorium.

The middle of the room will transform with a huge pile of canned goods, which will be used for the Catholic Charities Sharing Basket.

Organization case workers explained even after the event Tuesday, the fight against hunger is year-round in the Rio Grande Valley.

According to Feeding America, food insecurity is a growing problem in the Valley. Meaning, there’s a lack of consistent access to enough food to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

More than 100,000 Valley children are food insecure, more than the population of Harlingen.

With nearly one-in-two children living at or below the federal poverty level, twice the national average, the need only gets worse when school is not in session.

The Sharing Basket event is Tuesday at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the San Juan Basilica Auditorium on 400 Nebraska Avenue.
