MISSION – The Sharyland girls golf team are no strangers to success. The Rattlers have made it to the state tournament six years in a row.

They capped off their 2018 season with the best finish in school history, taking second place at the 5A tournament this week.

“The best Sharyland had ever done was third place,” said senior Raquel Flores. “We were able to beat that record. We’re proud of ourselves. I think we did the best that we could.”

“It’s an honor that we even got to play on the course at all,” said senior Amanda Shinn-Roldan. “We worked all year for this and had a coach that helped us compete and get to that level.”

First-year coach Ashley Garza knew she inherited a talented team. She told them they were capable of doing great at state.

“We scored the lowest round at regionals,” said Garza. “I told the girls we could win this. I told the girls we had to work hard and it’s anyone’s game at this point.”

A pair of seniors were on the 2016 team that placed third at state. They’re proud of the legacy they leave behind.

“We’re leaving our mark,” said senior Laura Rodriguez. “We represent Sharyland, but also the Valley.”

“Being able to be a part of that, it’s great,” said Flores. “Being able to show what Sharyland has and what kind of people we are, I think that’s good.”
