Starr County voters face separate early voting sites for local and general elections
Starr County, TX (KRGV) — Early voting is coming up in Starr County, but voters will need to use different sites for the school board election and the general election.
That means people who want to vote in both elections during early voting will have to go to two separate polling places.
Rio Grande City resident Federico Reyes said it would be easier if both elections were held at the same place.
“It would be better together because you would only go one place; it would be better. Now you got to go to the school and then to court,” Reyes said.
Channel 5 News timed the drive from the Starr County Courthouse, an early voting site for the general election, to the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD Family and Community Engagement Center, an early voting site for the school board election. The drive took about four minutes. The drive from that site to La Victoria Community Center, another general election early voting site, took 22 minutes.
Starr County Election Administrator Armandina Martinez said she hopes the inconvenience doesn't reduce the voter turnout.
“I am hoping that people will go out there and vote if they know the elections are going on,” Martinez said. “It's our midterm; we want people to go out there and vote.”
Channel 5 News reached out to the school district for an interview or statement but was told they have declined to comment at this time.
Reyes said this challenge will not keep him from voting and encourages others to do the same.
Rio Grande City Grulla ISD will have four early voting locations. San Isidro ISD will have one polling location. Starr County will have five early voting locations for the general election.
On Election Day, Starr County voters will be able to vote at any polling location.
Early voting starts on Monday, Oct. 19, and election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.
