STHS honors 3 Edinburg police officers for saving 2-year-old drowning victim
South Texas Health System honored three Edinburg Police Department officers for helping save the life of a 2-year-old who nearly drowned.
The officers received the STHS Hometown Heroes Award during a ceremony at the Edinburg Police Department. The award recognizes first responders across the Rio Grande Valley whose actions have made a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Back in March, patrol officers Luis Hernandez, Luis Saenz and Victor Duberney responded to a call involving a 2-year-old child pulled from a swimming pool unconscious and unresponsive.

The officers transported the toddler directly to the specialized pediatric emergency department at STHS Children's while administering CPR throughout the drive.
"I've always taken the department's training very seriously, and this isn't the first time I've had to provide lifesaving aid to someone in distress," Duberney said. "Because of that, I was able to rely on my training, experience and ability to remain calm under pressure to help this child."
The child spent nearly two weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at STHS Children's before being discharged with minimal long-term effects.
