Valley Shrimpers Say Program for Monitoring Shrimp Effective But Slow

BROWNSVILLE – Rio Grande Valley shrimpers say a new program intended to help monitor shrimp is working but not fast enough.

Every year, close to two billion pounds of shrimp is imported into the U.S.

In April, the Seafood Import Monitoring Program was added; the program establishes permitting, data reporting and record keeping requirements.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez spoke with a local shrimper who explains it’s frustrating to see very limited regulations.

"Very frustrating, you know, you work all your life trying to make a business out of something and then it gets out of your control with foreigners competing against you with a product that they can produce worth a quarter of what you can,” says shrimp outlet owner Charles Burnnel.
