As of March, more than 30,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley were on the state's "suspense list," according to the Texas Secretary of State's Office.

The first thing election officials want people to know is that being on the suspense list does not mean you can't vote.

It just means election offices need to confirm the address on a voter's registration is still current.

Brownsville voter Miguel Gonzalez said he tries to stay on top of one thing, keeping his voter registration information up to date.

"Anytime I move, things like that, I do update my information quite often. I haven't moved in the last five years, so my information is pretty solid," Gonzalez said.

The last time Gonzalez moved was about six years ago, just before the birth of his daughter.

"Came in, got the forms, and updated all my information," Gonzalez said.

The address on the voter registration matters, and as of March, thousands of Valley voters have had their registrations placed on suspense, including more than 18,000 in Hidalgo County and more than 10,000 in Cameron County.

"Actually, the suspense list isn't so much about the individual's ability to vote, it's just that we need to reconfirm their address. We just need to make sure that the registration address that we have on file is still current," Cameron County Elections Administrator Remi Garza said.

Garza said someone ends up on the list if the county hasn't heard from them or information shows you may have registered somewhere else in Texas.

"We need to confirm that the individual is still registered here in Cameron County, but we place them what's called on the suspense list, which all it requires is that they confirm their address when they vote or before the deadline," Garza said.

So how do you know if you're on the list?

"We automatically send out a notice of address confirmation, which is a second mailing, but that one has the ability to be sent forwarded to a new address. So, if somebody's moved, it would forward it to their new location, they fill it out and they send it back," Garza said.

If you missed that letter, you can still take care of it. Garza said you can update your information before the election or confirm your address when you vote.

"Your registration is still active. Voter registration renews every two years and automatically does so you don't have to worry about it if you haven't moved," Garza said.

For Gonzalez, keeping that information current is something he says shouldn't be put off.

"Shouldn't take forever, right? I get it done within the first week of moving," Gonzalez said.
