The motorcyclist killed in a crash in Mission has been identified and a bond reduction hearing has been scheduled for the man charged in the crash.

The Hidalgo County district attorney confirmed the victim's identity as John Alonso.

As previously reported, the crash occurred on May 3 on the westbound lanes of the Frontage Road near Holland Avenue in Mission. Apolonio Perez was attempting to evade a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper when he collided with another motorcyclist, identified as Alonso.

Alonso was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perez was charged with murder, intoxication manslaughter, and evading arrest in connection with the crash. His bond was set at $3.25 million.

The defense is requesting a bond reduction, arguing his bond amount is "excessive" and "oppressive" and a violation of Perez’s constitutional rights. They are asking the judge to lower the bond to a "reasonable amount" that would allow Perez an opportunity to be released while awaiting trial.

A hearing on the bond reduction is scheduled for Thursday, June 25. It is unclear what bond amount the defense is seeking and prosecutors are expected to argue whether the current bond amount should remain in place.
