Most of the Rio Grande Valley has dried up since last week's storm dropped seven inches of rain in Weslaco within 24 hours.

Neighbors north of the city are wondering if the drainage system worked.

Minerva Balderas, a Weslaco area resident, is counting her blessings. She is fearful of what could happen the next time heavy rain falls in the area.

Balderas said water started coming in through her front door and began pooling in the front yard during last week's storm.

Like clockwork, she knew what to do next — raise all furniture to avoid damage.

Balderas believes water from the fields across Mile 6 Road is flooding her yard. She is also worried about what that water contains, especially the drainage ditches near her house.

Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 General Manager Raul Sesin said the district is aware of the need for water in ditches to flow out of neighborhoods.

"It's a daily 24/7 type of operation that we run," Sesin said.

But Sesin said many of the ditches were not built for residential homes.

"A lot of these existing systems that are irrigation-based, there was some urbanized runoff, but not to the extent that it's gotten to," Sesin said. "So there are improvements that are required to manage that runoff."

The district dredges more than 700 miles of ditches and mows them nearly every 8 months. Some areas get more attention depending on concerns from nearby residents.

Neighbors near Mile 6 and Mile 13 say flooding continues to be a constant concern.

The drainage district also partners with cities like Weslaco to promote the use of detention ponds, which collect water in one place before releasing it into the drainage system.
