Weslaco firefighters killed in off-duty incident identified
Weslaco, TX (KRGV) — The Weslaco firefighters who died in what officials described as an “off-duty incident” have been identified.
Johnny Peña, 43, and Julia Rocha, 21, died on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Weslaco Firefighters Association.
“We have lost two great people who answered the call for our great city. We are hurting and trying to understand this terrible tragedy,” the association said in the statement. “Although they are gone, they will never be forgotten. May they both rest in peace. Until we meet again — don't worry brother and sister, we got it from here.”
Weslaco city and police officials have yet to provide details of the deaths, which remain under investigation.
During a press conference held on Wednesday afternoon, Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez noted that the deaths occurred on National First Responders Day.

"We would normally come together to thank the men and women who dedicate their lives to protect others. Instead, our community is facing a heartbreaking loss within our Weslaco Fire Department," Gonzalez said. "Two members will not be returning home to their families; that is a loss that is difficult to put into words."
Gonzalez said the city will stand with the fire department to support them and ensure they are not going through this tragedy alone.
