EDINBURG - An Edinburg city official is facing a charge for allegedly participating in an illegal voting scheme.

The alleged voter fraud took place during the November 2017 City of Edinburg election.

Ludivina Leal, Edinburg's city secretary, is accused of participating in an illegal voting scheme.

She was indicted by a Grand Jury.

This now brings the total of people charged for voter fraud to 22, including the Edinburg Mayor, Richard Molina, and his wife.

Leal was appointed to be the city secretary in March of 2018, four months after Richard Molina was elected to his seat as mayor.

In a statement, the city of Edinburg said:

" We are aware of the events involving the City Secretary. The accusation against her is not connected to operations at City Hall nor as her role as an appointed employee.  We wish her and her family well as they go through the legal process. Services provided to our residents by the City Secretary department and City Hall continue as usual. Our focus remains on continuing to provide excellent customer service to the residents of Edinburg."
