The San Benito Greyhounds are looking to get back to the dominance they've experienced in year's past.

"They know what's expected, they know what it's gonna take to restore that standard," San Benito defensive coordinator William Huerta said. "As you can see the guys out here are working and working hard. They're excited for this new season. It's restore the standard. We're restoring the standard this year."

The past two seasons, the Greyhounds have finished with an overall record of 2-9, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

Despite what were considered down years for the program, the team still managed to clinch back-to-back playoff berths.

The team struggled in non-district play but went 2-2 in district play both years. Now, the Greyhounds want more than just a playoff spot.

"Last year we had a lot of young talent now we have a lot of returning players," San Benito senior wide receiver Angel Garcia said. "It's looking a lot stronger than last year. We're just looking to make our mark this year and hopefully have a strong offense."

The Greyhounds are part of District 32-6A, which includes Los Fresnos, PSJA North, Brownsville Veterans, Harlingen and PSJA.

"In this district, even in the past districts we've been in, it's always been hard, but we always work hard enough to face that challenge," Huerta said.

Senior cornerback Peter Buenrostro said the experience on the roster gives the team a boost.

"We have guys with experience, guys who've been playing for a couple years already," Buenrostro said. "So, bringing that and then with a few younger guys that are coming in and filling the positions vacated, it's definitely a big help."

Garcia said the focus stays on daily improvement.

"Like you said there are a lot of great teams in this district," Garcia said. "For our part it's just coming in, getting better, focusing on the day that we have and not the future and just come back the next day and get better."

Non-district play opens against Edcouch Elsa and Edinburg Vela, followed by Laredo Alexander in Week 3 and Harlingen South in Week 4. Odessa closes out non-district play in Week 5, followed by a bye week.

District play begins against Brownsville Veterans, then Los Fresnos, PSJA North in Week 9, the Battle of the Arroyo in Week 10 against Harlingen and PSJA in the final week of the regular season.
