The Santa Maria Cougars had a successful 2025 season in the first year under head football coach Bobby Gaytan.
The team finished with a 7-4 overall record, 5-1 in district, just one win shy of capturing its first ever district title.
The Cougars return 17 players from last season's squad and are very confident that this year they can finally lift that golden ball and capture their first playoff win.
"They haven't won a playoff game here since their high school football existence and that's our goal as a coaching staff and as players," Coach Gaytan said. "Not just to win a playoff game, maybe multiple and maybe even compete for a district championship in route to those goals."
"This year, we're definitely working on our physicality and we're just going to keep on working and we're never going to say no to anything," senior linebacker and running back Andre De La Rosa added. "We're going to listen to whatever coach says and we got to trust in him. He trusts in us and we trust in him, so we got to work on that and just keep playing physical."
Santa Maria has five non-district games beginning with old rival Freer on August 28th. Then, the team flips the page to focus on District 16-2A DII competition, kicking off on October 9th at Kaufer and finishing with a home game on November 6th against Woodsboro.
