TxDOT urges drives to yield for pedestrians as fatal auto-ped accidents increase across the state

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) says fatal accidents involving pedestrians are rising across the state; three have occurred in the Valley in the last few days.
Last year, TxDOT recorded 4,852 cases involving pedestrians; more than 700 involved a fatality.
Edinburg police are investigating two pedestrian accidents, the most recent one involving a 26-year-old woman that was hit and killed on M Road Monday night.

“If there is a sidewalk use it,” TxDOT spokesperson Octávio Saenz said. “If not, always walk in the direction against traffic. You have to be a defensive driver, [and] you have to be a defensive pedestrian.”
Local authorities urge drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians and reminding the public to be aware of their surroundings when crossing any street.
