A pothole-riddled road splitting two Rio Grande Valley cities is draining money from drivers' pockets and sparking a heated question: who is responsible for fixing it?

The road is Mile 2 1/2 West near East Pike Boulevard, sitting on the border between Weslaco and Mercedes.

Channel 5 News spotted drivers slowing down and swerving around the potholes while out at the scene.

A 43-year-old woman who lives near Mile 2 1/2 West reached out to Channel 5 News' 5 On Your Side, saying the road's condition has already cost her hundreds of dollars in car repairs.

"I feel like we need to be heard, and we need something to be done on this road," Luz Villarreal said.

Villarreal has called this area home for more than a decade.

"I come up and down this road every day from morning to night, and we have a lot of commutes up and down this road," Villarreal said.

She says the road is not just a safety issue but is costing her money too.

"There's like a big, large, old piece missing, and it's just unbearable. I've had to do major car repairs on my vehicle," Villarreal said.

This year, Villarreal repaired the suspension on both of her vehicles. She believes the damaged road caused the damage.

"Both of my vehicles together? I would say more than $1,000," Villarreal said.

Villarreal says she has spent years trying to get someone to address the road.

"I've done multiple calls for the past 10 years, and nothing's been done. They just come fill up the holes, and when it rains, they reopen, and it's just getting worse every day," Villarreal said.

5 On Your Side reached out to officials from the Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Office, and the cities of Mercedes and Weslaco to find out who is responsible for maintaining the road.

Hidalgo County Precinct 1 has not yet responded. Both Weslaco and Mercedes told C5 On Your Side that a portion of Mile 2 1/2 West falls under their responsibility, but they are still working to determine who maintains the specific area where Villarreal lives.

"I feel like something might get done," Villarreal said.

5 On Your Side will continue following up with both cities and the county to determine who is responsible for this road.
