ROMA – The recent apprehensions of gang members and sex offenders happened near the cities of Rio Grande City and Roma.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to the city of Roma’s assistant city manager, Freddy Guerra.

He explains the number of crimes in the city has not increased, but the number of asylum seekers being apprehended in the city has.

We showed Guerra the latest apprehension release from Border Patrol.

"It was concerning, some of the questions we have are whether those criminals crossing over are intermingled with the large family units we've been seeing recently here in the city or are these criminals being apprehended in different areas of our community,” says Guerra.

We spoke to Border Patrol public information officers about Guerra’s questions.

They tell us the criminals were apprehended in family units; they were trying to escape.

The criminals were wanted all across the state of Texas and the state of Virginia.
