CDC: Measles Reported in 21 States, Including Texas
WESLACO – The Center for Disease Control and Prevention named Texas as one of 21 states experiencing measles cases in the U.S.
Eddie Olivarez, director of the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services, says the immunization rate for elementary to high schoolers in the Rio Grande Valley stands between 87 and 91 percent.
“The national average is in the high 60s or low 70s,” he says. “So we’re doing extremely well with vaccination.”
The agency says people who got measles were not vaccinated. Symptoms of the disease include a cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, sore throat, fever and a red blotchy skin rash.
