MCALLEN – Many come from across the Rio Grande Valley to learn more about the monarch butterfly.

In the past 20 years, the monarch’s population has decreased by 80 percent.

The Valley serves as a flight path for the insect.

The Monarch Festival at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen is made possible by the city participating in the Mayor's Monarch Pledge.

The pledge is a national initiative to commit to create habitat and educate about monarch butterflies.
