SAN JUAN – A Rio Grande Valley city says they’re going to be making some improvements to their local streets.

Last week, CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to a San Juan man who said the roads in his community were in terrible condition.

Ben Arjona, city manager for the city of San Juan, says he decided to call a special meeting to see what could be done to make the necessary repairs to multiple streets. He tells us commissioners’ approval and a surplus of funds will get the work done.

He says last year, the city hired an engineering firm to survey all of the roads in San Juan. After the completion of the survey, the firm listed the most damaged roads in the city.

The projects to repave the roads were split into two phases: Phase 1 covered roads in north San Juan and Phase 2 covered roads in the southern section of the city.

Arjona says Phase 1 has already been completed but Phase 2 was initially delayed because estimates for project reached approximately $1.9 million, a higher amount than what was originally expected.

However, he explains after carefully looking at the budget, a solution was found.

“We were able to get some monies from the previous Phase 1, so we had some surplus money,” he tells us. “We put the surplus monies with what we currently have, so we are a little over. So, we are going to have a little bit of spending monies at the ends, surplus monies.”

Arjona says the extra funds from Phase 1, added to the budget for repairs on the southern roads, means the city has enough to finish both projects.

He says construction is expected to begin as soon as this summer.

The city manager adds a map showing what roads are set to be repaved will be available on the city’s website Friday morning.
