A family is suing Edinburg CISD for $3 million and claims the district failed to protect their child from repeated bullying and a violent attack.

The lawsuit was filed on Thursday. The lawsuit identifies the students, but Channel 5 News will not identify the minor involved.

The lawsuit says a student bullied the minor, and at one point the student attacked the minor during football practice in August 2025, breaking his clavicle and requiring surgery.

The lawsuit alleges coaches and administrators knew about the threats beforehand but still let the accused student keep playing. The minor later transferred to another district.

Channel 5 News reached out to Edinburg CISD about the allegations.

In a statement, the district said it is aware of the claims, emphasizing that student safety is a priority, and that bullying and hazing are prohibited by district policy.

Read the full statement from the district below:

"Edinburg CISD is aware of the allegations being reported. Student safety is the district's highest priority. Bullying and hazing are prohibited by district policy, and the district takes these allegations seriously.

Federal student privacy law prevents the district from sharing information about individual students, and the district does not comment on personnel matters. The district will address any legal claims through the proper legal process."

A hearing date on the lawsuit was not set as of Thursday night.
