Texas is putting more than $192 million into widening Highway 4, the road connecting Brownsville to Starbase.

The Texas Department of Transportation plans to widen about 14 miles of Highway 4 starting near Oklahoma Avenue and stretching toward LBJ Boulevard inside the city of Starbase.

Highway 4 is currently a two-lane road with narrow shoulders. Under the new plan, it would become a four-lane divided highway with wider shoulders.

TxDOT says increased traffic and safety concerns are driving the expansion. 

"According to our crash data, the crash rates on this particular roadway have been one and a half to two times higher than the state average," TxDOT Pharr District PIO Ray Pedraza said.

TxDOT also plans to replace the asphalt with concrete, which the agency says will better handle heavy vehicles using the road.

Construction has not started yet. The project is set to go out for construction bids in the fall of 2027, and the work could take about two and a half to three years.
