Tailgate fever: UTRGV fans prep for season 2 opener at Vackar Stadium
UTRGV's second football season kicks off on Saturday, and fans are already getting ready to tailgate at the Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium in Edinburg.
Tents are already going up in the stadium parking lot, which will be packed with Vaquero fans by game day. The lot opens when the tailgate kicks off at noon, the stadium opens at 5:30 p.m., and the game starts at 7 p.m.
A local meat market is expecting another sales boost this season. Aguilar's Meat Market saw heavy foot traffic during the last football season.
"We saw raises in sales of about 20% between Friday and Saturday, more than anything," Aguilar's Meat Market General Manager Marco Aguilar said. "So we just want to make sure we're prepped and ready for all that influx of people."
The Vaqueros have five home games this year, down from seven last season. Aguilar said that could affect business.
"I am sure those weekends are going to be a little bit down compared to last year," Aguilar said. "I think we had back-to-back home games last year to start; Labor Day weekend was big for us last year. I think it will drop off a little bit from there."
Aguilar hopes other college football and NFL games will help cover the difference.
