Authorities say a fire at an illegal dumpsite and junkyard in Mercedes was caused by illegal burning.

The junkyard is located on North FM 1015. It consists of piles of scrap tires and junked vehicles. The weekend fire at the property is now raising new concerns about what's happening at the junkyard.

"There was a lot of black smoke, so I don't know what they were burning, but there was a lot of smoke, and the street was blocked off," ASE Sales and Service Owner Adrian Loza said.

Loza's business is right across the street from the property. He said he saw the smoke while driving to work Sunday and that it startled some of his employees who were already on shift.

"One of the tenants, who was working on some computer and internet stuff, called, and she was really scared. So I tried to make the approach and they wouldn't let me in, so I had to walk," Loza said.

The Hidalgo County Fire Marshal's Office said nine junk vehicles burned.

Authorities also said the property was being used as an illegal dumpsite and workers were illegally burning the vehicles.

Loza said it's concerning with his business and employees sitting not too far away.

"We were just worried about it crossing the street and damaging the neighborhood, basically," Loza said.

Authorities said the property owner was cited for not having a business permit or a permit to burn.

Channel 5 News spoke with the property owners. They agreed to an interview, but never answered the door when a news crew showed up.

The fire marshal's office said they will be patrolling the area more often and has reported the incident to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Loza hopes it helps prevent another fire from starting.

"It's important, from fire to shooting up in the air, education is the most important thing. How to turn on the fire and make sure you have a water hose. People shooting in the air and bullets. Safety affects everyone," Loza said.
