WESLACO – Local growers are on high alert due to the first cold front of the season.

Grower Hector Perez says harvest started last week but the weather kept them out of the fields.

"If it's not one thing, it's another thing. It's greening, canker, drought, hurricanes when there's a hurricane, so there's always something going on,” says Perez.

Citrus canker is a disease found on citrus trees and if often spread in cold, rainy weather.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez spoke with Dale Murden, president of Texas Citrus Mutual, about what is being done.

Murden says the best way to stop the spread of canker is through education and communication.

If you have a citrus tree and believe it has citrus canker, contact the Texas AgriLife Office at 956-968-5581.
