MCALLEN – It's a call no parent would want to get. A Rio Grande Valley mother said her daughter got lost after being dropped off at the wrong location by her school driver.

In just moments after answering her daughter’s call, Ashley Guajardo said she knew there was a serious problem.

"All I could hear was a bunch of cars going fast," said Guajardo. "And I was like, ‘Get to the side of the road. Do you see anyone that can help you?’ She was like, ‘No mom, I don't.’ And I said, ‘Just get to the side and I'll come find you.’"

Guajardo said her 12-year-old daughter, a sixth grader at McAllen ISD, was told by the bus driver to get off the bus even though she told him it wasn’t her stop.

"I was just terrified and scared," said McKenzie, who was with her mother.

"She called me crying and scared," said Guajardo. "She didn't know where she was at. Basically, I had to navigate her."

The student was left several blocks from her home Monday afternoon.

"Luckily, she had her phone because if she didn't, who knows," said Guajardo. “There's a lot of trafficking going around. I would hate for something to happen to anyone's children, and especially mine."

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to the McAllen Independent School District about the incident. They released the following statement, which reads in part:

On Monday, the district was made aware of a concern from a parent regarding her child who rides the bus home. There was a substitute bus driver in place and this led to an error. The district takes the safety and well-being of students very seriously and apologizes for the mistake. The matter will be addressed so that it does not reoccur.

Guajardo wants to make sure no one goes through what she did.
