EDINBURG – Hidalgo County and state health officials confirmed a person tested positive for the Zika virus.

The man who tested positive for the virus is no longer infectious, according to health officials. Laboratory testing shows the individual is no longer at risk of spreading the virus to mosquitoes or humans. 

The reason the patient tested positive was because Zika antibodies were still present in his blood. Health officials said it indicated there was an active infection around two months ago. 

Officials said the person didn’t travel outside the area or had any other risk factors. The virus was probably acquired via a mosquito bite in South Texas in the past few months.

Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Chief Administrative Officer Eddie Olivarez said they discovered the male had Zika when his pregnant partner was tested. Although her results turned up negative, the physician decided to test the man as a precautionary measure. 

"As of today, there have been no microcephaly cases from cases that we've investigated and worked on. I want to make that real clear. We had not had any," he said. "We've trapped thousands and thousands of mosquitoes. We have had zero mosquitoes that we've trapped. None of them have come back positive for Zika. None. Zero."

So far, more than 6,000 Zika tests have been performed since April.

Zika testing has become part of routine prenatal care for pregnant woman in six South Texas counties. Symptoms of Zika you need to watch out for include: fever, joint pain, eye redness and an itchy rash.
