MISSION - A national initiative to get outside and burn those extra holiday calories on the first day of the year, has spread through Texas.

This year Texas Parks and Wildlife organized more than 100 first day hikes across all state parks.

The rain didn't keep all the hikers from starting their year off on the right foot at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park.

Lead interpreter for Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park, Roy Rodriguez, guided a handful of people through the trails, pointing out native plants, birds, insects and the parks history.
