A 49-year-old Edinburg man crashed into the Hidalgo County Courthouse while allegedly drunk, forcing the building to close for several days, according to a news release.

Jesus Maria Alaniz Jr. is in critical condition and temporarily out of police custody while he receives medical treatment. Once released from the hospital, he will face a driving while intoxicated charge, the news release stated.

The Edinburg police and fire departments responded to the crash shortly after 11:30 p.m. Sunday at 100 North Closner Blvd.

A city spokesperson said a BMW was traveling southbound on Closner Boulevard when it failed to stop and crashed directly into the front entrance of the courthouse.

The crash caused extensive structural damage to the building, according to the spokesperson.

Emergency crews pulled Alaniz from the vehicle and took him to a local hospital. No one else was in the vehicle.

Investigators suspect alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash. A city spokesperson said Alaniz Jr. was arrested by the Edinburg Police Department on a DWI charge on Aug. 21.

The courthouse remains closed as of Monday, Aug. 31, and is set to reopen Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Hidalgo County officials are conducting a structural assessment to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Employees, jurors and members of the public scheduled to report to the courthouse should not report to the building until it reopens.

The investigation is ongoing.
