WESLACO – The Texas governor spoke with CHANNEL 5 NEWS about some of the most talked-about issues affecting the state.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was asked about border security and if it remained a top issue for him.

“It does remain a top issue, and we see why with this tragedy in San Antonio. This is a horrific loss of life that we need to work collectively to prevent. We need to crackdown on human smuggling and human trafficking, so that no more innocent people lose their lives,” he said.

He also spoke about the border wall and where it could possibly be built. He said the last conversation he had concerning the construction was months ago with the new Homeland Security secretary.

“It seemed like the focus was going to be on states other than Texas, and in parts of Texas that aren’t involved in the Rio Grande River,” Abbott said.

The governor added the secretary and him took a helicopter ride along the Rio Grande awhile back. He said the secretary voiced that it could be difficult to build a wall due to the serpentine nature.

And Senate Bill 19 was also discussed, which addresses health care and pay raises for retired teachers. He said he was glad to see the Senate pass the bill and he’s confident the House will as well.

According to the governor, “Our teachers deserve pay increases. They work hard and we sometimes lose good teachers, or unable to hire good teachers, because they’re paid too little. For our retired teachers I want them to hear this – we are working for our retired teachers for what is called TRS Care, Teacher Retired System Health Care. They need more funding (and) we’re working to get them more funding.”

The Texas Senate approved SB19 on Saturday
