Valley school districts announce delays due to cold front in the forecast

School districts across the Rio Grande Valley are announcing changes to the school day ahead of a weekend cold front.

Below is a list of the school districts that announced delays and cancellations for Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. This article will be updated as we learn more. Email any other school closures not listed to news@krgv.com.

Horizon Montessori Public Schools

Horizon Montessori Public Schools announced all their campuses in the Rio Grande Valley will have a start time of 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2026 and Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026.

CAMERON COUNTY

In a news release, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. said Harmony Schools and Marine Military Academy will have delayed start times on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. Contact the schools for details. 

Brownsville ISD

Brownsville ISD announced that on Monday, Jan. 26, all elementary classes will start at 10 a.m., all middle school classes will begin at 9:40 a.m., and high school classes will start at 10:45 a.m.

According to the announcement made on Thursday, morning bus routes will pick up students two hours later than their regularly scheduled time.

All staff will report to their campus at their regular start time.

All after-school activities scheduled for Monday will continue as planned, the district added. 

Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success

Raul Yzaguirre Schools for Success announced that their Early Childhood Academy at Leonel Castillo Community Center will have a late arrival at noon on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. 

Santa Maria ISD

The Santa Maria Independent School District will have a delay to the start of school due to inclement weather.

Classes for all three campuses will begin at 10 a.m. Bus routes will begin at 9 a.m.

Other schools who have announced weather delays to their school day are listed below:

HIDALGO COUNTY

Hidalgo ISD

The Hidalgo Independent School District announced a delay to their school start times due to inclement weather.

Schools will start later on Monday, Jan. 26. Elementary schools will begin at 9 a.m. and secondary schools will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Bus routes will operate one hour later than the regular scheduled pick-up time.

Breakfast for students will be provided. All extracurricular practices and events throughout the district remain scheduled unless informed otherwise by the program coach or sponsor.

McAllen ISD

The McAllen Independent School District said they have adjusted their school start times on Monday, Jan. 26 due to potential cold weather.

Delayed start times for elementary schools are 8:45 a.m., middle schools at 9 a.m. and high schools at 9:15 a.m. Schools will be open at their regular times in case parents need to drop off their children earlier.

Bus pickups will start one hour later from their regular bus stop.

All staff will report at their regular time and breakfast will be provided to students.

Mercedes ISD

The Mercedes Independent School District will have a delay to the start of school on Monday, Jan. 26, due to anticipated inclement weather.

Elementary schools will start at 9:30 a.m., middle school will start at 9:55 a.m., and high schools will start at 10:10 a.m.

Morning bus route pick up times will also be affected. Pickup times for elementary students will begin at 8:10 a.m., middle school students will be picked up beginning at 9:30 a.m. and high school pickup times will be at 9:30 a.m. 

All staff will report at their regular schedule times. To support families who need an earlier drop off, campus staff will be available to receive and supervise students during normal school arrival hours.

Mission CISD

Mission CISD will operate on a two-hour delay to the start of the school day on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. 

Elementary schools will start at 9:30 a.m., junior high schools will start at 10 a.m., and high schools will start at 10:15 a.m.

Morning bus routes will pick up students two hours later than their regularly scheduled time. All staff will report to their designated campus or department at their regular start time.

PSJA ISD

The PSJA Independent School District will be delaying the start of their school times on Monday, Jan. 26.

Elementary schools will begin at 10 a.m., middle schools will begin at 9:30 a.m. and high schools will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Bus route pick up times will also be affected. Pickup times for elementary students will begin at 9:30 a.m., middle school students will be picked up beginning at 9 a.m. and high school pickup times will be at 10 a.m.

Teachers and staff will report to their campuses at 9 a.m.

Sharyland ISD

Sharyland ISD announced they will be operating on a two-hour delay on Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. 

Under the adjusted schedule, the school day starts at 10 a.m. for elementary students, and 10:15 a.m. for junior and high school students. 

Breakfast will be served from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. for all students. 

After school care will be operating with regular hours, and families are being urged to contact coaches for details on the status of extracurricular activities. 

Weslaco ISD

The Weslaco Independent School District has announced a delay to school start times for Monday, Jan. 26.

Delayed start times for elementary schools are 9:30 a.m., middle schools are 9:45 a.m. and high schools are 10 a.m. Schools will be open to accept students at their normal times.

Bus schedules will also be affected. Bus pickup for elementary students begins at 8:30 a.m., middle school and high school pickups will begin at 9 a.m.
