FALCON LAKE--The Weslaco fire department is offering tips to stay safe after a man drowned while trying to save his 16-year-old daughter while swimming at Falcon Lake.

The daughter made it to shore safely. The body of the man, identified as 34-year-old Juan Jesus Sandoval Jr., was recovered Saturday night by the Texas game wardens.

""Make sure you have a cellphone handy, or a way to call 911, or reach help if you need it...especially when you're in remote areas because it takes responders a while to get out there," said Justin Morea of the Weslaco fire department.

Mora said you should always have someone on shore supervising, especially if there are kids.

"Kids like to push the limits, and see who can go out the furthest. You want to make sure the kids are close to shore, close to an adult. And just monitor everybody," he said.

The drowning is under investigation by the Zapata County Sheriff's Office.
