Authorities Looking for Escaped Inmate North of Valley
UPDATE (12/27) 11:05 p.m.: A Texas newspaper reported Jake Childers was killed in a shootout with law enforcement Tuesday night.
DPS aircraft pilots found the stolen vehicle taken by Childers in Atascosa County Tuesday afternoon. Several agencies assisted in the search. Around 9:15 p.m., officers killed Childers in a gunfight.
He was originally arrested for illegally fishing on private property and assaulting a Texas Game Warden. An investigation is ongoing.
NEAR GEORGE WEST--Authorities are expanding the search for a 36-year-old inmate who escaped from a jail north of the Rio Grande Valley.
Jake Childers escaped from the Live Oak County Criminal Justice Center over the weekend. The center is located near George West.
Authorities said they are now looking for Childers in Atascosa County. Since his escape, police believe he's broken out of his shackles and changed his clothes. They said he's also stolen a truck with guns inside.
Police said he escaped from deputies while they were transporting him from a doctor’s office back to the center. Video surveillance in the jail captured Childers escaping from the facility.
Live Oak County Sheriff Larry Busby said he got out through an unlocked window in the police unit.
“The officers told the jailer to get ready. We are going to fight him because he is really restless,” he said. “Then they drove in, and they drove up to the side of the port and he was gone.”
The sheriff said Childers also held a corrections officer hostage the day before his escape. State, local and federal officials are using dogs, horses and aircrafts in their search efforts.
Childers was arrested last month in Austin after he allegedly assaulted a game warden. He was sent to Live Oak County for outstanding warrants.
Officials ask residents to be cautious and call 911 if they spot him.
