Edinburg Church Looking to Increase Security after Vandalism Case

EDINBURG – An Edinburg place of worship is looking to increase its security.
St. Joseph's Catholic Church was vandalized nearly two weeks ago. The criminal is still on the run.
The pastor now considers adding cameras to the budget.
The damage was done to a statue outside the church doors and to a church window. The statue is missing a hand and has damages on the face.
A corner window, once fully decorated with stained glass, has a wooden block covering a hole.
Church pastor Greg Labus says the vandal used a concrete slab to break through. That slab, he says, bounced on the floor and hit the podium inside.
“Fortunately, the entire window didn't break, just where the rock went through. So, we're in the process of getting estimates of how much the repair of the window will be,” he explains.
They are also working on getting estimates for the statue repair.
Labus says as they budget for repairs, cameras may be added to the list as well.
He says he will first get some feedback from other church members.
He also has some questions for whoever did the damage.
“What is the motivation behind this? Are they anti-religion? I don't know,” he questions.
He says the slab, used to knock out the glass and the statue, are too porous for police to gather fingerprints.
The Edinburg Police Department is still investigating the case.
