Border Patrol Agent Christopher Luna was laid to rest Thursday in his hometown in a send-off his family says matched the man he was.

“Look at how he was honored,” Luna’s cousin — Rosie Luna Barrera — said. “He was honored with five miles of cars that were just for him."

Hundreds of people — many of them law enforcement officers — came to pay their respects to the 17-year Border Patrol veteran and Edinburg native.

Luna was onboard the National Guard helicopter that went down in La Grulla on March 8, killing him and two members of the National Guards.

Vivian Rodriguez, a former border Patrol agent, said Luna risked his life every day helping air crews along the border.

“He was a spotter for the pilots,” Rodriguez said. “He didn't have to do that, he could have stayed on the line.

Luna was surrounded by fellow Border Patrol agents as he was buried with full honors.

Luna came from a long line of Border Patrol agents, as his father and stepmother were also Border Patrol agents.

He leaves behind his wife, Esmeralda, and their two young children.

Just as their father was raised in the Border Patrol family, so will Luna’s children.

“This is forever, forever, their guardians. Their forever Border Patrol guardians are here for life for them,” Barrera said.
