With Mother's Day coming up on Sunday, flower shops around the Valley are busy working on orders.

But, if you're planning to buy flowers, you'll probably spend more than usual.

According to Sandra Basaldua - owner of Santana's Flower Shop in Donna - gas prices, shipping delays, and greater demand have all played into the current higher price tag.

The availability is not there because of the shipping,” Basaldua said. “So if we're not getting the product and we only have a certain amount, obviously the price is gonna go up due to demand.”

The owner of another local shop said they've had to raise their prices for similar reasons.

“And for days like Mother's Day, those prices go even higher,” Susan Martinez of Floral Creations and gifts said.

Basaldua says she used to import most of her flowers from Ecuador and Columbia, but she's had to scale back in an effort to keep costs down.

“A dozen roses, something as simple as this we used to sell these for $69,” Basaldu asaid. “Now we're selling them for $85. During Mother's Day, we're selling them for $95.”

Balsaldua says she's managed to keep a steady flow of customers despite the challenges, but other flower shops say they haven't been so lucky.

“It's been pretty slow like all this week, I think it's because the prices are going up,” Martinez said.
