Donna, TX (KRGV) — A Harlingen program that teaches people how to grow food is opening a second location in Donna.
Hope for Small Farm Sustainability is opening the location at Donna’s Plaza Amistad for its free gardening program, according to executive director Diana Garcia Padilla.
The program offers lessons and access to land where participants can grow their own food with support from USDA funding.
"We want to expand into different areas so they don't have to travel. They can go down the block and do it," Garcia Padilla said.
Garcia Padilla said the program teaches soil preparation, composting, planting, weed control, watering, and harvesting.
"Everybody should have access to real food. Nowadays, you don't know what you're getting in the store, where it came from, or what's in it. But if you grow your own food, you know everything about that food," Garcia Padilla said.
Harlingen resident Jim Jones is part of the garden program. He visits his garden twice a week and tends carrots, beets, radishes, and cabbage.
"This is my only opportunity to do something like this," Jones said. "I have a really small yard, so I don't have access to a garden."
Jones said growing his own food gives him more peace of mind about what he eats.
The nonprofit has supported local farmers for more than 15 years.
