Los Indios Int'l Bridge Officials Capture Concerning Bug
LOS INDIOS - A stowaway is in custody after being stopped at a Rio Grande Valley International Bridge.
Officials at the Los Indios Bridge intercepted the bug; a species in the snout weevil family that’s not supposed to be in the U.S.
The concern is bugs that aren't from here could cause rampant damage.
Customs and border protection says they've never seen this bug before and don't have a confirmed identity of the species.
They do know it's in the family that contains what's called snout weevils.
The fish and wildlife service says there are more than 4,000 invasive species in the U.S.
There are 50,000 non-native species that aren't from here, but don't do significant damage.
Officials will keep watching the bridges in the hopes of catching everything that doesn't belong.
