MCALLEN – The city of McAllen is raising water and sewer rates by 50 cents each.

McAllen Public Utility General Manager Mark Vega said the increase is two-tiered. He said it’ll help cover costs of additional debt MPU will incur for improvements and construction costs at the south water treatment plant.

He added the tiered-structure usage for both water and sewer will mostly impact high-end users like commercial establishments.

For a residential account with the average water consumption of 10,000 gallons, the water and sewer bill will increase by $1.60.

The rate increase will go into effect Oct. 1.
