A new campaign hopes to remind the public that families across the Rio Grande Valley are being affected by immigration arrests in the area.

"Valle Fuerte, Valle Libre" is a new campaign launched by La Union del Pueblo Entero, or LUPE.

LUPE announced the weeklong-campaign during a Monday press conference, and said they’re condemning families being separated by the immigration arrests.

“We want the community to see just how widespread these arrests and raids are happening and that it's also happening all across the Valley,” LUPE Deputy Director Dani Marrero Hi said.

As part of the campaign, yard signs depicting a monarch butterfly surrounded by barbed wire are being placed in confirmed locations where immigration raids and arrests have occurred.

According to Marrero Hi, the monarch butterfly symbolizes migration and freedom. The barbed wire on the signs represents U.S. Immigrations and Cusotms Enforcement.

“We also wanted to show a symbol of hope,” Marrero Hi said. “We wanted a symbol that said if you see this, an arrest or raid happened here. But we don’t have to cross our arms and hope it goes away. We can take action."

Seventy-five signs will be placed around Hidalgo County where ICE has made immigration-related arrests.

LUPE said they will also be handing out "Know Your Rights" kits in the areas where the signs are placed to educate the public of their rights in case they are stopped by ICE.
