MCALLEN – At least one person is dead following a forklift accident at the McAllen produce terminal.

McAllen police are investigating a "fatal industrial accident." It happened before 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mid Valley Ice on Military Highway and 23rd Street, right across the street from the McAllen Border Patrol station.

Police told CHANNEL 5 NEWS 25-year-old Gabriel Lopez, of San Juan, died at the scene.

Multiple witnesses said Lopez was backing up a forklift when the heavy machinery started to fall off the concrete platform by the warehouse. We learned he tried to jump off to safety but ended up under the machine instead. 

McAllen police are handling the investigation.
