A federal grant worth nearly $1 million is headed to Starr County to help animals and support a local dog rescue group.

The money will go toward renovating a building in La Grulla for Pawradise Dog Rescue and Sanctuary. It will also fund more spay and neuter services.

"That is the key and that is what is going to help the overpopulation that we have because there are so many families that are good owners that need help with spay and neuter. Now the funding is going to be there," Pawradise Dog Rescue and Sanctuary Founder Gloria Gonzalez said.

Those low-cost services will be available to everyone who lives in Starr County.
