BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville Police Department identified the woman whose body was found in a resaca Monday morning.

Police identified the woman as 53-year-old Maria Del Rosario Buitureira of Port Isabel. It’s still unknown how she died and ended up in the resaca.

A nearby resident spotted the body floating in the water near the intersection of Billy Mitchell and Boca Chica Boulevard.

Police said at this point it is a death investigation, as there is no evidence of foul play at this time. They’re waiting for the preliminary autopsy report to determine a cause of death.

Residents in the area said people frequent the resaca banks for walking and fishing but said they’ve never witnessed anything like this.

It’s unclear if Buitureira lived at the Waterside Apartments, that border the resaca, or why and what she may have been doing by the resaca banks.

EMS personnel that helped in the recovery said the woman was in the water at least overnight before her body was discovered.
