WESLACO – The Centers for Disease Control are reporting an increase in influenza cases across the U.S.

The flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. Flu activity begins to increase in October.

Most of the time, it peaks between December and February but can last as late as May.

Symptoms for the flu include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches and fatigue. There are some things people can do to prevent from getting sick.

The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the most important step in protecting against the flu.

Other tips include washing your hands frequently with soap and water, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs can spread that way.

Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that might be contaminated with germs.

People at the high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions and anyone 65 years or older.

People are urged to go to the doctor in they feel any of the flu symptoms.
